Arc Associates see projects as narratives: shaped by the history of a place, the conversations that develop a design, and the creation of the building through construction. Our buildings are not only concerned with what came before, but with what they will support next.

People

Hugh Gatenby studied architecture at the University of Edinburgh, where he received a Principal’s Teaching Award, and the London School of Architecture. He worked for Lina Ghotmeh in Paris and at John McAslan + Partners in London before founding  Arc Associates in 2023.

His work spans residential, commercial and cultural projects, with additional experience in interior design developed through work with Chapter Interiors and Wendover Partners. He has a particular interest in educational architecture, which formed the basis of his thesis project, and has spoken on the subject at events including the Learning Spaces conference in Chicago. He is also part of Minds Studio, advising on design. 

Hugh is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, accredited by the Architects Registration Board, and a fellow of Create Streets. In addition to design work, he is part of the Docomomo UK Working Party, which is active in the conservation of Modernist buildings.

Joseph Redpath studied architecture at Newcastle University and the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio, and was awarded the Rome Scholarship in Architecture in 2018. He has worked across Switzerland, Germany, Italy, and the UK, including a period at Atelier Peter Zumthor in Haldenstein, and between 2020 and 2024 taught alongside Francesca Torzo at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio.

His work has ranged from urban feasibility studies for new city quarters to low-energy retrofit, working for private clients, developers and public bodies. He has served as project architect on large-scale housing developments, with responsibility for design, planning, coordination and client relations.

Joseph is accredited by the Architects Registration Board and joined Arc Associates in 2024
