Bar H H

2021

Bar H H is a bar and tasting room set within a working vineyard in Kent. The project draws visitors closer to the full life of this boutique product, bringing together the acts of growing, making and drinking wine.

Approach is made along a full-length rammed earth wall, formed from soil excavated on site. Constructed using formwork that echoes the panelling of the adjacent winery, the wall conceals views across the vines, holding back the landscape until it is released in a single panoramic moment as visitors cross the threshold. In this way, the building acts as a fulcrum between vineyard, production spaces and public.

The entrance is recessed beneath a weathering steel roof that folds down to form full-height doors. Together with the rammed earth, the steel establishes a material language shaped by soil, weather and the growth of the vines.

The plan is organised around a linear spine containing the bar, kitchen and services. This allows the main space to remain open and adaptable, accommodating tastings, dining and events. The bar and kitchen are exposed to the room, making the preparation and serving of wine part of the shared interior. Bar H H opens directly to both vineyard and winery. Bifold doors connect the main space to a south-facing terrace overlooking the vines, while internal openings link back to the production spaces. The steel structure on the vineyard elevation traces the logo found on the wine bottles, aligning the architecture with the identity of the finished product.
